Why Portable Air Conditioners Make Sense

Portable air conditioners make a lot of sense for a variety of reasons. Let’s say you live in an apartment or a rental unit. You will not want to invest in a permanent air conditioning system because you will not be able to take it with you when the day comes that you would like to move, yet you have invested a sizable amount of money in the system.

This is no problem with a portable air conditioner. You can get one that is exactly the right size for your room needs, and when you want to move you can take it along.

Portable air conditioners also help improve a room’s air circulation. Another great feature to look for in a quality portable air conditioner is its ability to self-evaporate. What this means is that water from the air gets extracted by the unit during the cooling process, and the water is recycled by the system to cool off the hard-working cooling coils. This helps it work more efficiently, and improves its energy efficiency as well.

Some portable Air Conditioners offer several other features in addition to the all-important air cooling capability. Some offer air conditioning, dehumidifying, air cleaning, as well as a two-speed oscillating fan, and all in one small unit. Many of them have casters, which lets you roll the unit to any spot in your home you desire, and they do not need to be installed in a window. In terms of dehumidifying the area, many come with an overflow alarm for the catch bucket as well as a backup system for when the bucket is full, so there will never be any messes to deal with.

Happily, this unit is not permanently installed in a window, but instead is portable. This means anywhere you need cool air, you can now have it with ease. It makes sense to use a portable air conditioner in an apartment, or a home or office. But did you know you can also use the unit in covered outdoor situations, such as in an outdoor room, a workshop or a garage? These systems are great for vacation cabins that you visit infrequently, but when you do you want them to be comfortable in terms of the air temperature, so the portable air conditioner can be a great solution in this situation.

If you have a computer or even a server room, then you know that all of the equipment can run really hot, and it is imperative to have appropriate fans and cooling systems to keep it all from melting down. Portable air conditioners can work very well in these applications, because you can position them exactly where you need them.

How Air Conditioners Work

Posted by admin in Air Conditioning Units on 01 6th, 2010

An air conditioner works in the same way as a refrigerator. The portable evaporative air conditioners that we see in homes make use of water to cool the air. They are not so much use in an area with high humidity as the air they blow out is very humid. That is, a special refrigerant gas such as Freon is heated and then cooled through coils to give the cold air. With a fridge, the cold air is contained in an insulated box; air conditioners blow the cool air out into your room.

A compressor is used to compress the gas, making it become hot and high-pressured. As it runs through coils, the heat dissipates and the gas turns to liquid. The next step involves the liquid Freon running through an expansion valve so that it turns back into a cold gas. The Freon is mixed with a little oil that helps to lubricate the inside of the air-conditioner.

Many air-conditioners also use cooling towers to help save on the cost of air-conditioning. These cooling towers are generally found on the roof or at the back of buildings. Basically they are of mesh with water running through it to help cool off the gas.
